My name is Kohl Schrader and I am a graduate student at Iowa State University. I am originally from Columbia City, IN where I grew up on a small livestock and crop farm. My life in rural Indiana afforded me the unique opportunity to experience many facets of agriculture. Throughout my tenure in 4-H and FFA I was actively involved with production livestock projects. It was this diverse background that first garnered my interests in pursuing a career related to the field of animal science.
Currently, I am working towards a Ph.D. in Meat Science at Iowa State University and I have been actively involved in the Iowa Barbeque Society (IBS) throughout the pursuit of my degree. My participation with the society has been through the development and organization of educational programs such as R.I.B.S. (Refining Individual Barbeque Skills) for Kids and the Kid’s Q contest for the past four years. My involvement in these activities has allowed me the opportunity to educate youth about the importance of proper food handling procedures. In addition to my efforts with youth outreach, I have had the opportunity to serve as the educational speaker for the last three years at the IBS Annual Awards Banquet.
I encourage college students who are interested in pursuing a career related to the meat/food industry to become involved in this great organization. In addition to promoting outdoor cooking through numerous educational and charitable activities, students have the opportunity to apply for annual scholarships through the organization. I have been fortunate enough to receive scholarships in both 2007 and 2008 and these funds assisted greatly in the support of my graduate education at Iowa State University.
I have truly enjoyed working with IBS members who have become more than just fellow barbeque enthusiasts, they have become lifelong friends. I feel proud to be a part of such a generous organization and commend the members for their efforts to better their communities through various fundraisers and charitable events.
